sortie   A mission.  One sortie is tallied every time an
    aircraft takes off and lands.
sound barrier   The large increase in air resistance
    encountered by aircraft approaching the speed of sound.
Spad   A WW I fighter built by the French, acronym for

spoiler    A long, narrow hinged or retractable plate that
    extends along the upper surface of an airplane wing and
    that may be raised above the surface to reducing the lift
    of the wing and increase its drag.
spot the deck   To look at the deck rather than the "ball"
    during landing on an aircraft carrier.
SRAM   Short-Range Attack Missile.
stall   A loss of control of an aircraft due to low airspeed or
    radical	maneuvering in high altitudes.
stall speed   The maximum speed at which an aircraft will
    stall.
starboard   The right-hand side of a ship or aircraft.
stealth  See  low observable technology.
stern   The rear part of a ship.
